Quebec hockey enthusiasts continue to dream of the second life of the Quebec Nordiques in the NHL and they are apparently a very influential businessman behind the scenes to bring hockey hopes in high places with Pierre Karl Peladeau, according to the renowned magazine The Hockey News.
In its edition to appear on newsstands January 21, The Hockey News published its annual ranking of the 100 most powerful and influential in the world of hockey and the President and CEO of Quebecor appears at the 33rd level.
Anyone who is tipped to become the owner of any team in the National Hockey League in Quebec rose 25 spots in the standings over the last year, beating even the owner of the Montreal Canadiens, Geoff Molson, who follows in 34th place.
"Pierre Karl Peladeau is a titan in the world of Canadian media is clearly in love with hockey and wants to bring the NHL to Quebec. There is still no concession, but it made our list because he understands how to get there, "says the magazine.
To "very soon"?
In a move that is sure to rattle the fire hot amateurs, The Hockey News also indicates, through a source, Mr. Peladeau would not be so far off the mark as expected.
"He learned from people like Jim Balsilie (BlackBerry) what not to do. I think it can fit very easily and very soon with the ownership group, "said an officer of the NHL, who requested anonymity.
"We all know who Peter is, adds the source in the article. It conducts its business in the same way that Mark Chipman and David Thomson (Jets owner). He is silent in public, ensures the construction of local infrastructure and hope for the best when a team becomes available. "
The cities of Markham and Seattle, which are also on the board in order to win any NHL franchise, the classification are also talking with the presence of Graeme Roustan at 40th and 84th place in Don Levin.
Patrick Roy 52nd
If the list is dominated by players from the last lockout with Donald Fehr and Gary Bettman, first and second respectively, it lists several other well-known figures in Quebec.
One of the most popular of these, Patrick Roy, sits 52nd, up 30 positions compared to last season.
"He has the unique distinction of having kept Alexander Radulov happy in North America and attracts good Americans like Ryan Bourque and Adam Erne in a league that has not always been influential in the states of North East.
"Even if Roy is happy in the world of Remparts, he may have to withdraw its famous Stanley Cup rings in his ears if the NHL and its province have come to call", says the magazine. [The French expression in this last paragraph appears to be an idiom - not sure how to translate it to English].
