Could it be.....
One of my favourite games from the first season was the game in Minneapolis. No, I didn't make the road trip to watch the game live. (That would have been great.) I watched it on television.
What really got my heart going was watching a couple of shifts where Wheeler and Kane played together. Those two Jets are as fast as....well, jets! On their own they're dangerous. Put them together, and it's something to behold. I remember a goal in the Minneapolis game where Wheeler drove to the net, went behind the goal and fed a wide open Kane for an easy goal. The point is, they can BOTH fly. Kane was fast enough to beat his man to that spot in front of the net, to be ready for Wheeler's beautiful pass.
With this in my mind, I was really excited to see Kane and Wheeler playing together on the same line again in last night's game against Washington! Sure enough, in the second period, Kane was rocketing up left wing. He banked a pass to himself off the boards, beat his man, and cradled the puck again in full stride, streaking over the blue line.
Meanwhile, on the far side, Wheeler was racing up the right wing. The remaining defender was unsure whether to harass Kane or check Wheeler. In the end he was unable to do either. Kane fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Wheeler who buried it in the far half of the open net.
In just a few seconds, Kane and Wheeler had converted on a goal that put the Jets up 3-1 over the home team. The score would end 4-2 for the Jets.
For someone who watched Hull with Hedberg, and Selanne with Housley, that kind of speed gives me goose bumps.
Could it be?
Kane and Wheeler can do well on their own, but together, what are they able to do? Can they create that magic night after night for a whole season?
I sure hope they let them play on a line together all year. I would really, really love to find out!
