Does the NHL have a secret plan to stay in Phoenix forever? I've sat at a round table discussion with other jets fans and looked at this from every angle we could think of. There is no reasonable business decision you could construct to explain why they haven't pulled out already. They have long since established a rock solid case that they have given Phoenix every opportunity to survive, including going to court to block a move.
I submit that the NHL has made up its collective mind that they will keep hockey there with only one requirement: Glendale must pay $15M+ per year towards the team. That was the only time it was on the verge of leaving, in 2010 when it was 10 minutes from the deadline to pay the $25M. For whatever reason, this team WILL NOT move if Glendale pays....
Just thought of a good analogy to explain the NHL's mysterious dedication to Phoenix:
Imagine you and your buddies play a regular poker game. Problem is everyone cheats so no one will ever sit in with you. So for months you just fight back and forth over the same money. Desperate for some outside cash you invite your wife's retarted sister to play. Every week she brings her government check to the game and every week someone beats her out of her money, and you split it later.
Would you rather find another cheater to sit in or the retarted sister?
Hint: the retarted sister's name rhymes with Elaine Scruggs.....
So that's it, riddle solved!
NHL maintains the facade that an owner is imminent. Glendale pays $20M. Repeat this once a year, forever. Glendale is acting as an owner, putting in cash every year, guaranteed. NHL gets their cash.
This is better than an actual owner, since any owner losing $20M would go belly up. In this case the facade is the ruse to keep everybody paying.
I've solved the riddle people. This puppet show is here to stay until Glendale stops paying.
Insiders told us there would NEVER be another owner in Phoenix and they're right.
GLENDALE IS THE OWNER.
WIll the incoming government toss out the lease agreement for Jobing.com arena? No. Don't forget they have gone on record believing that it costs $12M a year to maintain the arena without a team. Will they pay $5M more to get 44 dates and get back $3M in taxes while keeping a team? Don't count on the new city government being against paying $17M per year yet!
