There was no countdown.
No formal announcement.
The Winnipeg Jets are officially an NHL team that spends to the cap.
The Winnipeg Jets and True North have finally reached their goal. Ever since 2007 when the league invited Winnipeg to present their case for an NHL franchise, there is always been another step ahead. There was an announcement, a move, rebranding, drafting, managing contracts, assessing talent and finally making the choice to spend the money where they saw the future.
Jets fans have been waiting with bated breath to see where this team would go once this organization got the chance to put their stamp on it. A quick check on cap geek will tell you that they money is already in the middle - it's been spent.
Quietly, without much announcement True North has declared this is the hand they will go to war with and they're gonna push all their chips in the middle.
A lot of words of been put into print discussing just exactly how talented this group is. A great deal rests on how this organization can mature these players into winners.
Are these guys going to take their game to the next level and start going for deep runs into the playoffs? The answer is sadly no. But after all of that effort time money and opportunity why would TNSE put everything on these guys then?
That's where the real epiphany occurs. By spending to the cap and effectively locking in this core group TNSE has now committed to developing our prospects into top six players.
True North stated a long time ago that they were going to build their team by using the draft. Spending the to the cap with players that they have on this team proves that that's where they're going. They passed on their chance to go shopping for high-priced big-name UFA's. Now the time comes to see whether or not these guys have the capability of putting together a winning franchise and success or failure rests on whether or not the draft picks can make the difference.
This season we Jet fans are going to get to see for the first time exactly how good these picks are. They said it was a five year plan but we're going to get a very clear indication this season exactly how successful that five-year plan will be.
Grab your seat jets fans it's going to be roller coaster ride.
