The big news today was that the Flames traded for the rights to Dennis Wideman from Washington and signed him to a 5-year deal almost immediately. Props to the Flames and Caps to admit that conversations had been going on for a few days prior to the trade which was made today. However, there is a whole lot of head scratching on this one if not outright ridicule towards Jay Feaster.
Wideman was an anchor for the Caps this season while Mike Greene was injured and provided some great offensive numbers but what happened in the playoffs was a different story. Points dropped, ice time dropped and usefulness dropped as the post season wore on for the Caps. The team took down the defending Cup champions and they made it somewhat interesting in the second round before bowing out. So why not keep him?
George McPhee is essentially saying he has 5.25 million reasons a season to have Wideman play on the far side of the continent in a division he may not even see next year (I haven’t checked the schedule). If you saw what I posted on Twitter today about Wideman you would have seen this statistic: between 2008-09 and 2009-10 Wideman had a 46 point swing to the negative in +/-. He went from +32 to -14. Interestingly the GA differential for the Bruins between those seasons is +4, 196 to 200 goals allowed.
Justin Schultz is the topic on many GMs and team minds and not since… well never has there been this much hype and anticipation for a player coming out of the NCAA as a UFA. Justin and his people are holed up in Toronto right now planning strategies and fielding offers from the likes of the Canucks, Oilers, Leafs, Red Wings and who know how many other teams.
The jokes going around today were all about the Oilers keeping their recently extended GM Steve Tambellini far away from the talks with Schultz instead sending Lowe and MacTavish. If there were 5 teams on his list and one was a team that had won the draft lottery three years in a row does it make sense to consider them? What are the Oilers supposed to say? “We’ll get it right sooner or later and we want you in Edmonton when we do?”
If any Winnipeg Jets fans felt Ondrej Pavelec was over paid they are now worrying more about the impending mosquito assault thanks to Jay Feaster and the Flames. However, what does it make Enstrom’s value? If a team could get Enstrom for a year and hope to convince him to stick with them for a slight discount as opposed to the free agent market is now the time to pounce? Perhaps Chevy wants to call Lowe and ask him to do a layover in Winnipeg and fill that extra empty seat he already paid for?
A bit of sad news was revealed right before the draft show began by James Duthie in regards to pioneering player agent Don Baizley. I had tweeted last week that some sad news would be coming out of Winnipeg and this was it. Out of respect for Baizley and his many friends in Winnipeg I did not want to get into details before the news was presented through proper channels.
What I can tell you is that a great person who was a mentor to many and a father figure to more has been diagnosed with cancer. He’s putting up a hell of a fight and in good spirits. Baiz asked to keep this news quiet for a bit, not even letting some of his longtime clients and friends know. Once word was out Anders Hedberg came from Sweden last week and Ulf Nilsson was on the phone to Don instantly. When news become wide spread after the draft Baizley’s phone almost had a wait list of people to speak to him including Forsberg, Sakic, Selanne among others.
So what’s next for Evander Kane and the Jets? Is his agent licking his chops at the thought of what a 21 year old who can score 30 goals can get after Wideman gets 5.25 for five years? The two sides are talking and while things with Pavelec reached a fevered pitch it appears no such emotion and brinksmanship is apparent between Kane and the Jets. Pavelec’s deal came out of the point where some thought it could not return subsequently catching many off guard. I would expect a Kane deal to arrive in the same fashion. The question will be the length, can the Jets get Kane to east up some FA time or do they risk having to go through this again in two years?
There are other holes to fill and one has to wonder about Tanner Glass? It was reported less than two weeks ago the deal was about 80% done and now no news at all. Logic would say Chevy wants to have one look around the market before locking in Tanner to 2-3 years, he can’t really do that until July 1st so if Glass is resigned expect it after that date.
Speaking of Free Agents who could best help the Jets? Jordin Tootoo’s name keeps coming up and he would provide some toughness and grit on that bottom six group. Tootoo has a great history in Manitoba and used to spend much of his off season’s in Winnipeg. Perhaps there is a fit?
There are stories/speculation that the Jets are looking for top 6 help too. With Wheeler, Little Ladd, and then Kane, Burmistrov and… it appears that a RW is what Chevy means. Perhaps that is where the team felt Eric Fehr could help but as we know that plan never got off the ground. Fehr was recently not qualified as an RFA and is free to test the market. Chevy did not rule out Fehr returing but not with a raise over the 2.2 million he made last year.
In all ‘fehrness’ to the player he did have difficult off season shoulder surgery last year and never fully healed. Some one who knows the player personally has told me on a few occasions he is just trying to get healthy so he can play and proper off season is going to help a lot according to the player himself. Some one may and should scoop him up before Chevy can offer him a deal and that’s a risk some teams should take. Fehr is a big guy who can help a team and has put up 21 goals before. The risk works two ways though, as should his shoulder not heal he may require more surgery and that could spell the end of a once promising career.
The Jets open there prospect development camp from July 9th to the 13th at the MTS Iceplex this summer.
