Kane ponders six-year, $29-M deal from Jets By: Gary Lawless Posted: 7:19 PM | Comments: 0 (including replies) Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane is close to a long-term agreement with the Winnipeg Jets that would pay him close to $30 million. (JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES) Just 24 players in the NHL scored more goals than Evander Kane last season and the Winnipeg Jets have placed a premium value on his services, offering him a rich and long-term contract. Kane and his representatives are mulling over a six-year deal in the neighbourhood of $29 million as negotiations between the two sides have ramped up. It’s swap-proposal time in the Kane talks and unless someone digs in their heels, an agreement should be reached. Talks to this point have been productive with both sides proving to be creative and flexible in order to get an agreement that works for everyone. Kane is just shy of his 21st birthday and notched 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points last season. The chance for financial security a deal like this provides can’t be ignored. Any agent will tell you that kind of money can’t be passed up by a player so young. Generational money has to be snatched when available. For the Jets, this puts their most promising prospect in the stable for a long time. If Kane continues to develop and grow, they could have a 50-goal man in the near future. Kane is brash and at times stubborn but he craves superstardom and wants to be among the league’s best. He has the talent and will to be elite. No one should be surprised if he turns out to be a consistent all-star. The Jets must protect and guard him for as long as they can. There will be a day when Kane is free to test the open market and there’s a good chance he’ll be very expensive. Putting that day off for as long as possible only makes sense. This deal goes a long way to protecting the future, which is key to the philosophy among Jets management. The Kane deal confirms and is in line with Winnipeg’s strategy. Develop their own players and lock them up long term at the cusp of their prime. The next 12 months will see more and more of this as GM Kevin Cheveldayoff attempts to get Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Zach Bogosian and Toby Enstrom in similar deals. For Jets fans, the prospect of having already committed to Andrew Ladd and Ondrej Pavelec, as well as Kane and the rest of this group all inked to four- or five-year deals, should provide smiles. If these players continue to grow and improve, Cheveldayoff will have some kind of hockey team on his hands in two or three years. Patience has already proven a strength among Jets management even if it’s confounding to fans at times. But the payoff shouldn’t be that far down the road if Cheveldayoff can stick to the plan and execute. Kane is another of these stepping stones for Cheveldayoff, but momentum appears to be building in Winnipeg’s favour. Players like to be part of something when they can see progress and commitment from management. Same goes for the folks in the seats. Getting Kane done long-term sends a message to the ticket-buying public but it also reverberates within the dressing room. It’s fine to talk about the future but sooner or later it has to arrive. A long-term Kane contract gets the Jets one large step closer. gary.lawless@freepress.mb.ca Twitter: @garylawless www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/Kane-ponders-six-year-29-M-deal-from-Jets-163488756.html

It just seems that Chevy has a very clear plan about how he going to go about building this team...a foundation built on identifying and locking up the players who will lead this team...sign them to long term deals...players like Ladd, Pav, Buff, Slater...and I expect before the summer ends Kane and even possibly Bogo...

m.bleacherreport.com/articles/1292978-winnipeg-jets-why-are-negotiations-stalling-between-evander-kane-and-the-jetsEvander Kane and the Winnipeg Jets: Why Are Negotiations Stalling? I, like many others, have no doubts that Evander Kane will remain with the Winnipeg Jets for a very long time. However, he remains an RFA, and the situation continues to drag week-by-week with little talk or updates between both parties. My only concern from this situation is the fact that it has taken this long for both sides to come to terms. Maybe it's more curiosity than concern, but the whole ordeal is interesting to say the least. It's mid-August, and the Jets are still negotiating with their top forward. Rumors and reports broke about a week ago that Kane was offered a six-year, $29 million contract according to the Winnipeg Free Press. If so, why hasn't he accepted yet? Would it not be wise for Kane to take the proposed deal? The length of the rumored deal seems perfect and the terms seem more than fair. Money can't be the issue that's holding Kane back from signing on the dotted line. Kane isn't the only top-notch RFA forward awaiting to come to terms this offseason. Dallas Stars budding superstar Jamie Benn is another RFA awaiting a new deal. Much like Kane, Benn is being counted on to be the leader of the Stars for years to come. And much like Kane, Benn is a very good player with potential to become great in this league. Kane and Benn may get similar deals, but one contract that both of theirs could be based off of is recently re-signed Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes. According to ESPN, Skinner recently signed a six-year, $34.35 million contract extension—an average annual value of $5.725 per year. As far as discussions go between Kane and the Jets, maybe money is a slight issue after all. With Skinner making an AAV of $5.725, maybe Kane wants to make over $5 million per year as well. Even so, I can't imagine money being the sole reason for negotiations to go on this long. Maybe, just maybe, there isn't a need to rush. Maybe Kane's enjoying a nice and long summer vacation and is just waiting until September to sign the new deal. Or maybe it doesn't even matter, with the NHL's current CBA set to expire in September. Really, it does matter, but maybe it's what's delaying the process in general. Negotiations continue between the NHL and the NHLPA in hopes for a new deal by September 15th. However, no new CBA will mean another lockout. Whether this has an affect on Kane and his own contract negotiations is unknown. Kane is the Jets' top priority, and a deal will get done eventually, regardless of the terms. Patience is hard to come by when the top forward remains unsigned. And in the midst of a potential lockout, folks will get riled up if Kane isn't signed by then. Season or not, Kane will be a Jet in 2012-13 and many years to come. When Kane does eventually come to terms, I'm sure fans will want to see that presser to hear firsthand from Kane on why the process took so long. It's only a matter of time.

A post on another forum said the snag right now is that Kane wants the first year of his contract as a bonus (guaranteed) in the event of a lockout.
Am I correct in assuming that in the event of a lockout, contracts are frozen, teams don't lose a year on a player? If the above about Kane is true, I wonder if the contract was worked that way if we'd lose a year on the contract even if there is a lockout.

Yeah, I'm sure contracts would be frozen. Seeing as Kane is trying to land a bonus, I guess those must be exempt until Sept 15. I would also guess it works for Kane if it is a short season. Full pay for half a years work. Nice try but I don't see the jets being that stupid.

Talking with some friends lastnight, one was saying that after the last lockout, a year was wiped off each players contract. I can't find any info on that though.

The more I think about it though that can't be possible. too many player would become free agents and teams will have lost the year to workout extentions and that can't be right.

jets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=640303&navid=DL|WPG|homeRemaining Optimistic Thursday, 23.08.2012 / 11:56 AM / News Articles It was the annual Vancouver Giants (WHL) golf tournament on Wednesday, August 22nd at the Tsawwassen Springs golf course, owned by Vancouver Giants majority owner, Ron Toigo. Giants alumni, staff and current players attend the tournament every year and lucky for them, the rain held off this year. Evander Kane was one of several Giants alumni, current NHL players to hit the course. TSN’s Team 1040 was live from the patio at the Springs golf course to pull him off the tee and chat. The Giants are ready to kick off their training camp today as it’s business as usual for the Western Hockey League. But it’s no secret that the NHL is in a much different boat. Meetings are ongoing between the NHLPA and the NHL to try to come together on the new CBA agreement. The process is a lengthy one and the two sides are not as close as everyone would have hoped for at this late stage. Kane stated that due to prior commitments, he was not in attendance at yesterday’s meetings in Kelowna, BC, but did say he will be in the meetings in New York next week. Although the focus of the day yesterday was golf for Kane, he said the CBA situation is very much on his mind. “It's something that is a little unsettling because you are unsure what's going to happen,” he said. “If the season is going to start on time, or if you have another month of training left than you normally do. You have to stay with your training program that you always do and act like the season is starting on time. “You don't want to sit out a season, you don't want to miss any time. I watched last year what happened with the NBA and NFL and you want to get things handled. I think the players for the most part are pretty respectful of the owners and I think we just want a fair deal, that's really what it boils down to.” Kane admit that he’s a little bit of both a pessimist and an optimist when it comes to this situation but really concentrating on the positives and is going ahead as though everything will start as normal. “I like to be optimistic," he said. "I want to play hockey, I think everybody wants to play hockey. We want to play in the NHL, it's the best league in the world and you hope everyday that we can build a bridge and get a little closer with the ownership. We still have time left and that's the main thing. We're working hard as players, to get the deal done and make sacrifices. We just hope from the other side that they do the same thing." Kane doesn’t only want to play hockey, he wants to watch it as well. He said he really empathizes with the fans, especially the fans in Winnipeg. “I’m a fan of the game as well, even though I'm a player, I am a fan- I watch other hockey games,” said Kane. “Unfortunately, I haven't been in the playoffs for the last three years, but I still watch because I am a fan of the game. For there not to be any hockey highlights on TSN, would be unfortunate. It would be a boring TV session for me! “I think as players, we appreciate the fans just as much as anyone else, they are a big reason for why we have so much success. Winnipeg specifically, they haven't had NHL in 15 years then they get a taste of it, it would be unfortunate for another year to slip by.” On December 18, 2010, Donald Fehr was voted in by the NHLPA as their executive director. Since the last lockout in 2004, Kane made an observation that under Fehr, it seems that the players have really started to form a much more solid bond. “I wasn't involved in the lockout back in 2004 but from what I heard, guys were all over the place, but this time around guys are a lot more united with the leadership of Donald Fehr. I think he's done a great job at presenting himself throughout last year and showing us players that we can trust his opinions and his leadership. We've really banded together as players and really followed him in the right direction.”

Evander Kane signs new deal WINNIPEG, CANADA - It took a whole summer of talking, but Evander Kane put his name on a new contract with the Winnipeg Jets just in the nick of time on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old restricted free agent signed a six-year, $31.5 million deal with the Jets about an hour before the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement expired at 11 p.m. He went from signing his first massive contract as a pro to being locked out by the owners in a matter of 60 minutes or so.
“It’s a little bittersweet,” Kane said during a conference call that started at 10:45 p.m. Saturday but had to be over by the time the lockout began. “You want to play hockey, but at the same time I’m kind of on Cloud 9 and really excited about this contract and the commitment from both sides. It’s a real positive thing, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the great fans of Winnipeg. They’ve been tweeting me and letting me know how they feel. So it’s great to get something done.”
It’s not like he had an option to go anywhere else, but Kane’s long-term deal should put to rest any questions or concerns about his commitment to playing in Winnipeg. Despite scoring a career-high 30 goals, he was dogged by off-ice rumours about restaurant tabs and his desire to be in a small market.
“Playing this last year in Winnipeg, in Canada, the spotlight’s on you, the fans are behind you, and there’s no better feeling than having that,” Kane said. “To be able to get a deal done, even though it took right up until the deadline, is great for myself and Winnipeg. I know I’m really excited about playing.”
Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff believes Kane has the skills worthy of more than $5 million per season.
“He’s an exciting young player that has an ability to score goals and coupled with the ability to play a pretty physical game for a player that can put the puck in the net, that’s a very good combination,” Cheveldayoff said. “If you look up and down the league, there’s some players that can score and there’s some players that are big and can bang.
“But when you have a player that has the abilities to do that, along with his skating abilities at the age that he’s at, we think there’s tremendous potential and room for growth.”
Kane’s deal was the last in a flurry of deals that were hammered out before the NHL locked out its players on Saturday night, leading many to wonder why owners were forking over so much cash and then putting the locks on the doors because of it.
“It’s still about managing your budget and managing where things are at within your own organization,” he said. “You’ll have financial allocations now and also moving forward. When times are a little more certain with a new CBA, obviously you’ll look at the deals and they’ll slot in where they are and you play your budget accordingly.”
Once the puck is finally dropped again, Kane will be ready to prove that he’s worth the money the Jets will be paying him.
“I’ve gotten better and better every year I’ve been in the league, and I don’t see that changing,” he said. “I can’t really put numbers on what’s going to happen, but I can tell you one thing: I haven’t made the playoffs in three years, so that’s probably the first thing on my list.”
The left-winger is coming off a season in which he also had 27 assists in 74 games for 57 points. Four of his 30 tallies were game-winners. The Vancouver native has appeared in 213 career NHL games for Atlanta and Winnipeg, and has 126 career points.

^^^ Wow!!!! Talk about your poker player!!! Nicely played by Kane!!! Good for the Jets for signing him up for 6 years -- well played also!!! I literally laughed out loud at the hockey "insiderr". He has so little credibility that he's on par with Count Bettman! Wow! Great to have Kane locked up for 6 years. I am so happy and excited about that!!!

The club issued a statement announcing the deal about 30 minutes prior to the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement expiring at midnight Eastern time. “Obviously very excited about it,” Kane said on a conference call. “I’m grateful that the Winnipeg Jets took that leap of faith and make that kind of commitment.” Kane, 20, played in 74 games with the Jets last season, recording 57 points (30-27) and 53 penalty minutes. He said he didn’t feel pressure to get sign a new contract before the pending lockout. “I think obviously you want to get a deal done as soon as possible, but things like this take time and it came up to the very last hour to get a deal done,” he said. “Better late than never.” The Vancouver native has played in 213 career NHL games with Atlanta and Winnipeg, collecting 126 points (63-63) and 183 penalty minutes. Kane, who was originally drafted fourth overall by Atlanta in 2009, said signing just before the lockout is a strange situation. “You obviously want to play hockey,” he said. “But at the same time I’m kind of on cloud nine and pretty excited about this contract.”
